Like virtually every other commune in France, Gatteville erected a monument to the victims of the Great War in the 1920s.

But implementing this simple and laudable idea meant raising the necessary funds, agreeing on the location and nature of the monument, and the list of names to be inscribed on it…. Each of these stages was marked by differences of opinion that sometimes turned into conflict.

Fortunately, wisdom prevailed and the inauguration on 21 January 1921 is remembered as one of the most beautiful ceremonies the village has ever seen.

This exhibition recounts the various episodes in local history linked to the erection of this meaningful monument, which is still essential to our memory.
