22 September 2024 - Guided tour for the European Heritage Days
Place Notre-Dame, the centre of Gatteville-le-Phare, is remarkable for the many public and private buildings that surround it. A well-informed eye can retrace many stages of local history over the last millennium.
Three of these buildings are particularly significant:
- Saint-Pierre Church, a protected historic monument, with its two bell towers (including the Romanesque bell tower, which is particularly protected);
- the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Bon Secours, known as the Chapelle des Marins, also a protected building dating back to the 11th century;
- the War Memorial, erected in the square in 1920.
To mark the Heritage Days, Boris Bonnin, President of Gatteville Héritages, led a guided tour of the square, focusing on these three buildings. From the Merovingians to the 1944 bombings, via the Middle Ages and the Revolution, listeners were able to take a tour of local history.
